We'd like to invite natives and visitors alike to celebrate Currituck Heritage and the centennial of Cooperative Extension at this year's Currituck Heritage Festival. The event will be held on Saturday, September 20 from 1-6pm at the Currituck County Rural Center in Powells Point. The day will begin with a re-creation of the annual county farm picnic and will continue with live music, exhibits, a Currituck history timeline, vendors, contests and activities for the whole family in a beautiful setting. The event will end with a community barn dance with musical guest Out 'N The Cold from 4-6pm.
Come and just enjoy the day or register for one of the many contests from Corn Shucking, to the Homegrown and Handmade contests or the Little and Junior Miss Currituck pageants. This workshop will take place over three evenings, and participants MUST attend all three evenings in order to receive the PLT materials. Workshop participants will be working from the PreK-8 Activity Guide, and two Secondary modules (Forests of the World and Focus on Forests).

Project Learning Tree (PLT) is an interdisciplinary environmental education program designed for educators of ANY background. The hands-on activities facilitate the exploration of topics including communication, economics, energy and fuels, geology, government, history, recycling, transportation, watersheds, wildlife, and much more! Participants will learn about the materials through direct engagement in the PLT activities throughout the workshop.

The PLT activity guide covers it all!!! The PreK-8 guide is correlated to the Common Core (math and ELA) as well as to the NC Essential Standards (science and social studies). Both Secondary modules have been correlated to high school biology, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Civics & Economics, and 21st Century Geography. CEU renewal credits are available and this workshop qualifies for Criteria I in the EE Certification Program.

Please pre-register and make a personal commitment to attend to ensure there are enough materials and space for everyone. If you must cancel, please do so in a timely manner so someone else may take your place in the workshop. There is no charge for the workshop or materials through partnerships with state PLT sponsors.

The Chatham County Center of North Carolina Cooperative Extension will offer a pollinator conservation workshop and garden tour as part of its Enhancing Sustainability Series on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. starting in the auditorium of the Agriculture Building in Pittsboro. Chatham County Agricultural Extension Agent Debbie Roos will give an overview of North Carolina pollinators and discuss the role of native bees and managed bees in crop pollination. Participants will learn about the principles of planting a pollinator garden and – just in time for fall planting – how to select trees, shrubs, herbaceous perennials, herbs, vines, and grasses to attract a diversity of pollinators. Debbie will emphasize native plants but also include a few other plants that provide good resources. The workshop will conclude with a tour of Cooperative Extension's pollinator garden at Chatham Mills, about half a mile from the Agriculture Building. The garden is comprised of 145 different species and cultivars, 85% of which are native to the piedmont of North Carolina. The workshop will be repeated on Saturday October 4 so participants can select the most convenient date.
