The Chatham County Center of North Carolina Cooperative Extension will offer three spring pollinator conservation workshops and garden tours as part of its Enhancing Sustainability Series on Wednesday, May 18, 2016, Saturday May 21, 2016 AND Monday, June 6, 2016 starting in the auditorium of the Agriculture Building in Pittsboro. This is the same workshop offered on three different dates to accommodate participants’ schedules and keep class size small. Chatham County Agricultural Extension Agent Debbie Roos will give an overview of North Carolina pollinators and discuss the role of native bees and managed bees in crop pollination. Participants will learn about the principles of planting a pollinator garden and how to select trees, shrubs, herbaceous perennials, herbs, vines, and grasses to attract a diversity of pollinators. Debbie will emphasize native plants but also include a few other plants that provide good resources. The workshop will conclude with a tour of Cooperative Extension’s pollinator garden at Chatham Mills, about half a mile from the Agriculture Building. Creating Sacred Spaces

There are many ways that artists have worked with nature in art. This workshop will be an artistic based practice rooted in nature that is directly connected to self-awareness, nourishing and healing potentialities, and is appropriate for any skill level. Different methods of artistic expression will be used in the garden’s natural environment. Blending personal self-reflection with reflections on the many meanings of nature, participants and affiliated instructors will experience a variety of artistic processes in the context of the spirit, tactile nature, and diverse spaces within the gardens. Many of the activities can be repeated and utilized after the workshop.

This workshop will be led by Cape Fear Botanical Garden’s (Garden) Artist in Residence Ginny Sykes. Please dress for the outdoors and bring a bagged lunch.

Started in 2005 as a way for a few neighbors to show off their hens and coops, the Henside the Beltline Tour D'Coop has grown to a one-day garden tour that encompasses 20 coops and thousands of visitors. The event raises non-perishable food and money for Urban Ministries, a Raleigh-based non-profit that provides essential services to close to 20,000 Triangle residents each year. Coop owners and the tour organizers volunteer their time to promote back yard poultry and urban farming. -

Build and/or expand your Faithful Families programming by learning from experts in the field about: encouraging shared use for physical activity, promoting local foods, engaging food pantries to connect food security and nutrition, and increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in your faith-based programming.

The summit will feature a keynote speaker from The White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships. This office builds bridges between the federal government and nonprofit organizations, both secular and faith-based, to better serve Americans in need. We are excited to welcome Acacia Bamberg Salatti, Director of the Center for Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships (The Partnership Center) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

The summit is for trained facilitators and those currently implementing Faithful Families– in North Carolina and beyond. Attendees will spend time networking and will learn how to expand and enhance their Faithful Families work through community partnerships.
