NC Farm School (NCFS) is the place for you if you have been dreaming about starting a farm business, but need some guidance on how to start your business plan. NCFS utilizes an extension framework in a 4-to-6 county cluster where Extension agents play a key role in classroom presentations, group facilitation, and enterprise selection. We teach sound production practices and crop management decision making as a part of a process to deliver a fully developed business curriculum over four months. These classroom hours utilize the support of the agents and the practical knowledge of local farmers to facilitate classroom learning. The classroom business sessions are reinforced with multiple farm visits, ensuring a hands-on learning experience. Our method deploys resources from each region while allowing flexibility in location to meet the program’s demand. NCFS is a “learn-plan-do” program. Each month, NCFS participants are expected to apply what they have learned through homework assignments and a web-based business plan template. The 2026 South Central NCFS will be held in Rowan, Cabarrus, Iredell, and Mecklenburg counties. Classes begin on March 2nd and finish on June 29th. Registration is now open. The cost is $550 for two team members or $300 for one. The Bread Riot is offering scholarships for future farmers from Rowan County. Go to ncfarmschool.com to find registration and more information. Contact the Rowan County Extension office at 704-216-8970 about the Bread Riot Scholarships.
After years of hard work and service, Timothy Davis, a testament to the transformative power of NC Farm School, returned to the land that shaped him. Farming has always been in his blood. He grew up just down the road on a family farm in Anson County. When he came home from the military, he knew exactly where he belonged. Alongside his wife, he built Timmy’s Family Farm into a thriving vegetable operation that feeds both family and community. With the help of NC Farm School, Timothy turned years of experience into a sustainable, strategic farm business. For Timothy and his family, farming is more than a job. It is a legacy. They are proud to share that legacy with their grandsons, teaching them the same lessons of hard work, integrity, and gratitude that have guided their own journey.
Through NC Farm School, they gained the knowledge and confidence to keep growing smarter, not just harder. Timmy’s Family Farm stands as proof that with faith, family, and a good plan, you can build something that truly lasts. If you are thinking about starting a farm, take it from Timothy Davis: start small, have a plan, and let your farm grow at its own pace. Surround yourself with good people and keep learning. NC Farm School 2026 is now accepting applications. Go to ncfarmschool.com to get the application and more information.
