4-H Poultry Pullet Project

Available for youth ages 5-18 as of January 1st, 2024. Must be enrolled in 4-H Online.

Cost is $25 per participant.

Youth that are registered will attend 3 Zoom sessions (recording provided) and receive 5 chicks. Youth will be responsible for care, feeding and housing of these chicks. Each youth ages 8-18 are required to complete a project record book and must turn in their project record books by September 6th.

Youth can choose between Rhode Island Blue and Buff Orpington for their chicks.

At the end of this Pullet Project, there will be a chicken show September 21st. Pullet project participants must submit a project record book and show 3 chickens to participate in this show. Please visit the Awards and Incentives Website to learn about Project Record Books. Stay tuned for a Project Record Book Workshop.

Dates:

  • Register and pay : March 21st by 5 p.m. – pay at the Watauga Extension Office (cash or check only).
  • Brooding Zoom : April 4th @ 6:30 p.m.
  • Nutrition and Housing : April 11th @ 6:30 p.m.
  • Health : April 18th @ 6:30 p.m.
  • Project Record Book Workshop TBD
  • Showmanship Clinic: Morning of July 20th (Exact time TBA)
  • Chicken Show : September 21st (more details to come).
  • Project Record Books due : December 5th by 5 p.m. at the Watauga Extension Office.

Other information:

  • Chicks will be vaccinated for Meraks Disease.
  • Chicks should all be hens.
  • Chicks will be picked up at the Watauga Extension office in late April. (dates will vary based on USPS).
