4-H Pie Baking Contest 2023

For the love of pie, get your recipes out and rise to the 2nd Annual Sweetie Pie Bake-Off challenge! Open to Youth Ages 5-18.

Recipe Challenge Guidelines:

  • Pie entries may only be dessert pies (no savory pies such as pot pies, quiches, or meat pies).
  • The pie categories will be (with either Homemade or Purchased Pie Crusts):
    • Fruit Single Crust
    • Fruit Double Crust
    • Cream Pies
    • Custard Pies
  • Contestants can enter only one pie.
  • “Family” made pie entries are encouraged and accepted

4-H Judging & Awards (for youth ages 5-18):

  • Cloverbud: 5-7 years
  • Junior: 8-12 years
  • Senior: 13-18 years

How to Enter:

  • Call Swain County Extension at 488.3848 to register.
  • Pick-up your *Grab and Go Kit on Thursday, August 10, 2023 at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Swain County Center (60 Almond School Road, Bryson City).
  • Please include a recipe with your pie or email your recipe to: kristi_griggs@ncsu.edu
  • Drop of your pie on Monday, August 14 or Tuesday, August 15 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at N.C. Cooperative Extension, Swain County Center(60 Almond School Road, Bryson City).
  • Winners Announced on August 19 (Swain Fair day!!)

  • Fruit Pies Single Crust (Homemade or Purchased Crust)
  • Fruit Pies Double Crust (Homemade or Purchased Crust)
  • Cream Pies (Homemade or Purchased Crust)
  • Custard Pies (Homemade Crust or Purchased Crust)

Pie Judging Criteria:

  • Attractiveness and appeal of pie
  • Creativeness and uniqueness of pie
  • Delicious sounding/appealing pie recipe
  • Pies made with homemade crusts and purchased crusts will be judged in separate categories

NOTE: Grab & Go Kit includes:

  • sugar
  • pre-rolled pie crust
  • pie pan
