Episode 1: Not Your Mother’s Activism

Episode one of #PasstheMicYouth follows the story of student Sidney Uriarte as she returned to her home country of Nicaragua to visit family. During her visit, the country became enveloped in massive student-led anti-corruption protests which Sidney took part in. Hosts Nyawira, Luke, and Sam discuss Sidney’s story, the role of young activists, and social media as a tool for activism.

Episode 2: Activism is in Fashion

Dominique always loved art. When the Trump administration rescinded DACA, she used her talent to spread a message without even having to say a word. Hosts Sam, Nyawira, and Luke discuss the importance of clothing in activism and self-expression.

Mic Drop: Activism, According to Students

For this Mic Drop #PasstheMicYouth, hosts Luke and Sam take on a simple yet complex question: What is activism? Hear from them along with several other students about their thoughts on activism, and find out different ways — big and small — that you, too, can be an activist.

Mic DropJuntos Means Together

In Mic Drop, host Sam Chan interviews a group of young Latinx activists at Gardner Magnet High School to discuss how they engage in activism through writing. Learn more about their newest book, “The Voices of Our People, Nuestras Verdades,” how they’ve grown by telling their stories, and what advice they have for youth who are interested in getting involved in activism.

Mic Drop: Cultural Appropriation

In this episode, Dominique and co-host Luke Shealy piggyback off their last mic drop about how fashion and art can be a force for activism. They extend the conversation by examining the ways in which self-expression can lead to unintended implications in the form of cultural appropriation.

Mic Drop: Stop the Stigma, Period.

This Mic Drop addresses period poverty and its impact on menstruators around the world. #PassTheMicYouth sat down with Ameer, policy coordinator for Period., to discuss the stigma associated with menstrual products, period poverty, the importance of access, and the campaign “National Period Day.”

Puerto Rico and the Power of Protest

Aliana was one of the young leaders on the front lines of the protests in Puerto Rico last summer. Corruption in the government and a leaked private group chat led the citizens of Puerto Rico to demand the resignation of their president. More than 500,000 people, the majority of whom were under 30, protested for over two weeks to hold government officials accountable and restore power to the people. In this episode, we speak with Aliana about her experience, the role of young people in social change efforts, and the power of protest.

Should School Resource Officers be in Schools Questions?

Should School Resource Officers be in schools? Hosts Nyawira, Luke, and Sam speak to students of the Youth Justice Project who are looking to answer this question. They have been working with their school system and local community to examine the role these officers play. They discuss the process of planning a town hall and how to navigate complex systems like schools.
