Summer 2024 at Betsy-Jeff Penn!

children canoeing at Betsy Jeff Penn camp

Tyrrell County 4-H will be camping at Betsy-Jeff Penn this year, July 28th-Aug 2nd.

The Betsy-Jeff Penn 4-H Educational Center is North Carolina 4-H’s premier camping institution in the state, serving over 7,000 young people every year. Nestled on nearly 200 acres of forests, lakes, streams, and fields in the North Carolina Piedmont, the Center is proud to provide research-based educational experiences that help develop and promote the life skills necessary for youth to become productive members of society.

Tens of thousands of young people have benefitted from the life-changing summer camp experience at BJP since the center opened in 1964. Our overnight camp offers programs for campers age 8-14, with Leader-in-Training (LIT) programs for older campers age 15-17.

If a camper is 12-13 years old, they will be considered Adventurers. This means they will spend one night away from their cabins but remain on camp property. If your camper is 14 years old, they are considered Trekkers. This requires an extra form. Campers will spend multiple nights away from camp to canoe on the Dan River, try their skills at actual rock climbing, and camp in tents.

The LIT program is an application base acceptance. Any youth interested in this program will be required to meet with their 4-H Agent first.

Who Can Go?

4-H Residential Camp is for youth ages 8-14 years old. Spots held by Tyrrell County 4-H will first be available to Tyrrell County youth and second (after May 1, 2023) to out of county youth.

Tyrrell County youth are fortunate to be partially funded for this week-long camp through the Parker Cahoon Foundation. Cost to attend 4-H Camp is usually $500 if enrolled through a 4-H program or $625 if enrolled separately.
