On Sept. 26, Rowan County 4-H hosted the Special Needs Sheep Show at the Rowan County Fair. This show, which was created especially for youth or adults with special needs, was offered on the same day that the fair was open for Special Needs Day.
This year, a total of 20 local youth participated in this show. Students from Rockwell Elementary, Southeast Middle and Carson High participated, along with youth who attended with their families.
During the event, each participant was paired with local 4-H and/or FFA members who were experienced in showing livestock. A total of 14 youths volunteered at this event. The volunteers helped the participants become comfortable around the sheep, name the sheep and practice leading the sheep. After this practice time, an official show was held. This year’s event included a 10 a.m. show and a 10:30 a.m. show.
When it was showtime, all participants led a sheep in the arena with the help of a volunteer. Our judge, Sherilee Deal, interacted with each participant and awarded each with a medallion and ribbon. Special thanks to Premier Animal Logistics for sponsoring and to the local sheep owners who allowed us to use their sheep for this event.
This was an exciting and unique hands-on learning opportunity for all who were involved.
