Local Produce Options for Rowan County
Over the last 20 years, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. Here are the basics: a farmer offers a certain number of “shares” to the public. Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products may be included. Interested consumers purchase a share (aka a “membership” or a “subscription”) and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season. Members also share in the risks of farming, including poor harvests due to unfavorable weather or pests. By direct sales to community members, who have provided the farmer with working capital in advance, growers receive better prices for their crops, gain some financial security, and are relieved of much of the burden of marketing. Typically one share will be enough produce for a family of four, and the cost is around $20-30/share. My family has participated in a CSA every year for the last four years. I love it. Even though we grow a vegetable garden every year, the CSA basket is always a welcome addition. I’m a working mother and while I love to garden sometimes life gets in the way, and I can’t always make it to the Farmers Market. The CSA basket gives me fresh seasonal veggies every week.
